History

Richard Smiedt is the founder of Move Collective, which is headquartered in New York City. Stephanie Smiedt is Creative Director. They are a husband and wife team who created Bobble in 2008 when they realized the environmental impact of product creation and consumer waste.[1]

Product

Bobble was invented by Move Collective, LLC and was designed by the industrial designer Karim Rashid.[2] It contains a carbon filter that removes chlorine and contaminants from municipal drinking water. [3] The product was created to encourage consumers to move away from single-serve water bottles, which can be harmful to the environment, and to replace them with reusable ones. Bobble was the first filtered water bottle designed to mimic the experience of drinking from single-serve water bottles so consumers could more easily make the transition to a reusable product.

Bobble is made from recycled plastic and is free of BPA, Phthalates and PVC is also available in three sizes: 13oz, 18.5oz and 34oz. Each unit accommodates a replaceable carbon filter.[4] When introduced, the filters came in six solid color options[5]: red, yellow, green, blue, black and magenta. As of September, 2011, two additional solid filter colors are being offered -- lavender and navy -- as well as four multi-colored filter opotions.[6] On October 4, 2011, the Bobble website announced that it is "proud" to debut 2 "new" color filters for fall --the navy filter and an additional green-color filter (which is more olive green than the original kelly green offering)-- that are available "exclusively" only at retailer Crate & Barrel (which announcement appears to incorrectly use the terms "debut" and "exclusively", as the navy filter had already been offered on the Bobble website for weeks prior to this press announcement.[7] [8]

Bobble's efforts to change consumer drinking habits have been featured in numerous print articles including O: The Oprah Magazine, Shape (magazine), Popular Science and Redbook. Business magazines such as Entrepreneur (magazine) , Inc. (magazine) and Fast Company (magazine) have also covered the Move Collective product.

Product Development

Move Collective has also worked with Karim Rashid to invent Bobble’s brush, a cleaning tool that has bristles made from static material that grabs and pulls dirt from surfaces. Bobble’s brush cleans the three bobble sizes and many other household products.

Recently, actress Sophia Bush partnered with Bobble to create a limited edition version of this water bottle, being a medium 18.5oz. Bobble having a filter with 3 different shades of green.[9] Proceeds raised in conjunction with Crowdrise go towards The Nature Conservancy. [10]
